Beat the Spring Rush: Why Now is the Time to Book Your Garden Maintenance
As the frost begins to lift and the first snowdrops appear, it’s easy to think that garden care is still weeks away. However, at MyHandymen Service (MHM), we know that a beautiful summer garden isn’t made in June—it’s built in February and March.
The UK gardening season officially kicks off in March, but the "Early Bird" advantage starts now. Here is why booking your maintenance visit early is the smartest move you can make for your outdoor space.
The Garden Calendar: From Planning to Planting

While the "active" growing season is a sprint from April to August, the early months are about setting the foundation.
February (The Warm-up): This is the month for the "invisible" work. We focus on planning your layout, cleaning and sharpening tools, tidying borders, and pruning shrubs while they are still dormant.
March (The Wake-up Call): This is the primary kick-off. As the soil warms, we tackle the first lawn cuts, initial weeding, and patio cleaning to wash away the winter grime.
April & Beyond (The Growth Spurt): Once April hits, growth goes into overdrive. If you haven't tackled the basics by then, you'll be playing catch-up with rapid weeds and unkempt lawns.
Why "Early" is Better Than "Later"

1. Tackle Weeds Before They Take Over
Removing weeds in March, before they have the chance to establish deep root systems or drop seeds, saves hours of intensive labour later in the summer. It’s much easier to pull a seedling than a shrub-sized weed!
2. Protect Your Soil and Lawn
One of our top tips is to wait for dry soil. Working on frozen or waterlogged ground in early March can compact the earth and damage your lawn. By booking early, we can monitor the weather and hit that perfect "dry window" to give your grass its first high-blade trim.
3. Beat the "April Rush"
April is the busiest month in the gardening world. By getting your debris cleared, edges tidied, and plants fed in February or March, you skip the long wait times and ensure your garden is "planting-ready" the moment the sun stays out.
4. Mulching for Moisture
Applying mulch in the early season helps lock in moisture and suppress weeds before the heat of July and August. It’s the ultimate "insurance policy" for a low-maintenance summer.
